Color Alert

Technology

SAFETY FEATURES YOU CAN SEE

Energizer Color Alert Technology dyes the mouth blue seconds after contact with saliva, alerting of a possible ingestion.

One battery. Three layers of defense.

Non-Toxic
Bitter Coating

Bitter Taste, Discourages Swallowing

Our coin lithium batteries include a non-toxic bitter coating on the cell that discourages swallowing and helps prevent ingestion.

Color Alert
Technology

Safety features that you can see

The Color Alert technology activates once saliva interacts with the battery, visibly dyeing the mouth blue in just seconds to alert parents and caregivers to get help fast.

Child-Resistant
Packaging

Frequently Asked Questions

WHY IS Energizer’s SAFETY APPROACH DIFFERENT THAN ANYTHING ELSE IN THE MARKET?

Energizer is the world’s first brand to offer 3in1 Child Shield coin lithium batteries with 3 lines defense: our child-resistant packaging, a non-toxic bitter coating, and the exclusive Color Alert technology. Together, these features help prevent accidental ingestion and help detection.

At Energizer, we strive to provide both long-lasting performance with child safety features. Through extensive testing and research, we developed a bitterant formula with the Color Alert and optimized its application to ensure it does not compromise battery performance. Our batteries have undergone comprehensive testing across various devices to ensure compatibility. Recently, we updated the coating application to the positive side of the cell in a full dotted circle shape, we optimized the placement of our safety features to ensure performance.

In-stores, you may still find the negative side coating (back side of the battery cell), which is as effective in terms of safety features, just might require a slight rotation of the battery to connect with devices.

The formula reacts within seconds when the cell interacts with saliva, meaning the child will taste the bitter coating, and the blue dye will appear in their mouth.

The dye is non-toxic food grade. Our coating contains approximately as much dye as an ounce of a sports drink. The visibility of the dye will vary based on length of exposure and cleaning applied to the child’s mouth.
The bitterant and Color Alert formula is being updated to the positive side of the battery in a full dotted circle but in some cases you can still find it on the negative side of the battery as a dotted rainbow. Both enable performance and device compatibility.
If the Color Alert technology comes into contact with moisture, there is a possibility it will transfer to the wet surface. The intention of the Color Alert technology is to react with saliva, and as with all batteries, they should be handled with dry hands.
The bitterant/Color Alert formula is good for one exposure. If the Color Alert/bitter coating has been partially or completely removed from a coin lithium battery, the battery should be disposed of safely and replaced. More importantly, if an ingestion attempt has been made on a coin lithium battery, parents and caregivers should seek immediate medical attention and take additional action to keep batteries out of the reach of children.
These batteries should be kept away from moisture. If they are exposed to moisture, including a humid environment, there is risk that the dye will stain other objects. Dye staining the mouth and/or hands may be removed with repeated washing, rinsing, or tooth brushing. If dye stains a device, wipe with damp cloth and/or use a cotton swab to remove dye. The staining should not impact device performance. For all other surfaces, manufacturers of blue food coloring also recommend blotting with a paper towel, rinsing with water, applying white vinegar, and washing according to the care label.
